Wondering Wednesday #21
What are the characteristic hallmarks of air and water?
This Wondering Wednesday, I’m going to do something different and depart from honeybees specifically altogether. I’ve always intended the Wonderings to be about nature writ large just as much as it is about bees. In other posts, I’ve been writing about some physics teaching I did last month in Chicago with a great group of kids. I really pushed the envelope there in trying to strike a balance between what I’ve called “profane” and “reverential” science. I feel quite pleased with the results, and I wanted to share them here. The students each created a final artistic-scientific piece trying to capture, from their own experience, what the natures of air and water were. You won’t see any explicit reference to honeybees, but of course honeybees are just one manifestation of the myriad forms nature creates that are made to work with air and water to beautiful effect. So, you can think of this foray into air and water as a way to try to understand further my post last week, for example, about breathing in bees.
Here is the powerpoint of their work (and mine). I hope you enjoy! Think of it as a gallery where you get to wander around and appreciate different artists' visual, written and spoken contributions to the wonder of air and water.

Thank you for sharing the beautiful work of your students, as well as your own lovely poem. What a great assignment for your morning lesson!
